Dr. Douglas Freel

Dr. Douglas Freel is a veteran of the United States Navy, in which he served as a Naval Hospital Corpsman. He was employed by the Western Michigan Burn Center as a burn technician while a full time pre-medical student. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1979, and was accepted into the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in 1980. After completion of the four-year medical college program, he was accepted into a two-year surgical associateship in Macomb, Illinois, and joined the medical staff of McDonough District Hospital. Dr. Freel successfully gained medical staff privileges in Quincy, Illinois, the first podiatrist ever accepted onto the Medical Staff of either of Quincy's local hospitals.

He founded the Freel Foot & Ankle Clinic in 1986. It then grew from a two-room office to one of the Midwest's largest solo podiatry clinics, expanding to its present facility spanning over 4,000 square feet in 1999.

Dr. Freel developed an orthoses (orthotics) lab in 1987, providing hand-made custom fit orthoses exclusively to his patients. The successful outcome of these orthoses created a greater demand, and in 2001 the lab was expanded to accommodate the general public, utilizing the same production techniques and intrinsic balance system integral to over a decade of success in treating conditions related to imbalance of the feet. Given the accuracy of the orthoses and their successful treatment of many common foot ailments, he founded the Accuped Inc., and orthotics lab made available through online ordering.

In 2001, the Freel Foot & Ankle Clinic expanded internally to include Dr. Duane "Dewey" Hanzel, a highly skilled and successful podiatric surgeon from Montana. Select Return to Staff to see his biography. An additional office was then established in Pittsfield, Illinois.
